Watermelon Eating Contest and Apple Pie Bake-Off Added to the Heartland Nationals
The Goodguys 28th Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals is the midsummer classic on the Goodguys schedule and to top it off, we are celebrating the 4th of July with some summertime festivities and fun! What’s better than over 4,000 hot rods, live music, fireworks, and more? How about a Watermelon Eating Contest (open to kids and adults) and an Apple Pie Bake-Off!
Saturday, July 6 will be ground zero for these fun-filled competitions! The Elwell building will host the Apple Pie Bake-Off at 11am. Judges will taste each pie in the competition and the winner will be crowned. To enter the competition, you must bring two pies for the judging. If you have a pie and you want to participate, contact Justin Bower with Goodguys at justinb@good-guys.com.
The Watermelon Eating Contest will offer sign-ups on Friday and Saturday at the DJ booth during the event with two categories: Kids (8-15) and Adults (16+). The Riley stage at 2pm will be the location and the contest will go like this:
• Kids will have 45 seconds to eat as much watermelon as they can. No spitting out watermelon, seeds only. The watermelon will be weighed to declare the winner!
• Adults will have no time limit as they will have to finish the entire slice with no red showing…it has to be eaten down the inner white rind! They will signal once they are done and a judge will determine if they are the winner.
And the final detail? No touching the slices! All watermelon must be eaten hands free. Things are about to get fun and messy in Des Moines!
