Goodguys 2019 AutoCrosser of the Year to be Crowned During the Duel in the Desert!

The season finale Goodguys event for 2019 is happening this weekend and a big race is on tap on the AutoCross track – the coveted Duel in the Desert which brings 32 of the Nation’s quickest and most skilled autocross drivers together to duke it out until there’s only one left standing. The winner of the 32-car shootout will be crowned the 2019 FAST AutoCrosser of the Year, and the title of a Goodguys Top 12 award that comes with a custom Snap-On toolbox and RaceDeck flooring.

We’ve already crowned class champions in the six Goodguys AutoCross classes. Earning those honors were Josh Leisinger in the new PRO-X class, Corey Williams in PRO, Bill Graves Sr. dominating the Street Machine class, Patrick McGinnis in Truck, Sam Matchett in Hot Rod, and Danny Popp winning the All American Sunday points championship. Each of these overall points champions are awarded with a 2020 season pass granting them free entry at every event they attend next season.

Going into Scottsdale and the Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals this weekend with the biggest target on his back is defending Duel in the Desert winner Scott Fraser who will be behind the wheel of Bruce Cambern’s 1966 Cobra once again. Cambern and Fraser took the majority of the 2019 season off working on the Cobra to make it better, faster, and stronger knowing the Duel in the Desert competition always brings out the best in everyone. We saw the Cobra for the first time since June last weekend at the Autumn Get-Together in Pleasanton and the new and improved Cobra looked ready to strike by winning the PRO-X class as well as the PRO-X/PRO shootout. They’re rolling to Scottsdale with one thing on their mind, and that’s to repeat their 2018 performance and defend their title.

But there’s 31 other racers who have a different agenda this weekend. 18 racers have already claimed a spot in the 32-car Duel in the Desert which include Josh Leisinger, Chris Jacobs, Robby Unser, Tim Molzen, Mike Maier, Tom Kamman, Mike Hogate, Bill Graves Sr., Ron Scott Jr., Corey Williams, JB Boyer, Tyler Gibson, Rich Gregory, Danny Popp, Dan Ballard, Pat McGinnis, Jared Leisinger, and Chris Osborn. The remaining 13 spots are open for the race-in opportunity happening Friday and Saturday morning of the Southwest Nationals.

Goodguys AutoCross always brings out stiff competition and fierce racing, but with the AutoCrosser of the Year title on the line the Southwest Nationals always sees the competition and racing step up to new levels. It’s the season ending race before the cars are tucked away or improved during the winter months and we’re anticipating it’s going to be a throwdown event this weekend over on the AutoCross track with everyone bringing their best to Scottsdale!

A lifelong car kid, Steven grew up around drag strips – his name may sound familiar because his grandfather is Bob Bunker, a Pro Mod pioneer who piloted the “Folsom Flash” ’55 Chevy from the ’70s through the ’90s. Steven’s father, Bob Bunker Jr., heads up Bunker Motorsports and is a regular in the West Coast racing scene, building chassis and race cars for more than 30 years. With genetics like that, it’s no wonder Steven has a passion for both cars and motorsports. In addition to helping his father and honing his fabrication skills at Bunker Motorsports, Steven began shooting photos at the drag strip and capturing the action with his Canon camera. He is now artfully crafting stories around the awesome machines at the shows, as well as the men and women behind them. When he's is not on the road covering events, he spends his downtime out on the water fishing, building his 1962 Chevy Nova, or cruising his 1987 GMC Suburban.
