Third Wave – A Guide to the Latest Third-Gen Camaro and Firebird Parts
After a 10-plus-year run for the second-generation F-body, best known as the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, General Motors knew it was time for a complete makeover in the early-1980s. The second-gen models had been introduced at the peak of domestic muscle car performance and had survived a decade of declining power, growing weight, increased plastic, and flashy graphic decals substituting for horsepower. It was time for something fresh.
The all-new platform for the two models was a radical and welcome change, so much so that the Z28 was named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year in 1982! At their launch, the performance numbers for the new F-bodies were still not great, and you could even order the Iron Duke 2.5-liter inline-four as an engine option, but electronic fuel injection was offered with the TBI Cross-Fire Injection 305c.i. V8, with the iconic Tuned Port Injection following soon. Over the years, horsepower numbers and performance handling crept back into both platforms with the Camaro IROC-Z and the sought after 1LE package, or the Trans Am GTA and Firehawk.
The final year for the third-gen F-bodies was 34 years ago, which means it’s getting more challenging to find original cars to restore and modify along with replacement components. However, as the popularity of third-gen Camaro and Firebird platform continues to grow again, so does the number of innovative aftermarket components and restoration parts – just take a look at some of the latest offerings!
Full Frame Foundation
Transform your third-gen F-body into a modern performance machine with a SPEC Chassis from Roadster Shop. The SPEC Chassis is a full frame solution that bolts directly under the unibody. The system lowers ride height while matching the factory ground clearance and increasing overall rigidity.
At the heart of the SPEC Chassis is a precision-engineered IFS system replacing the factory strut-based suspension. Lightweight tubular control arms, eccentric lower adjusters, and a proprietary RS forged knuckle system deliver smooth movement through the full range of travel. In the rear, the factory torque arm is eliminated in favor of a parallel four-link with a Watt’s link, improving lateral control and allowing much more tire space.
Better Tanks
Clean fuel and proper fuel pressure are paramount to the performance of your classic third gen, so it’s best to start fresh with a new fuel tank. Tanks Inc. has you covered with tanks made to bolt into your 1982-92 Camaro or Firebird and support the performance of today’s builds.
Each tank is formed from heavy-duty steel then powder coated with a durable silver finish. The fuel pump and sending units mount in a recessed area to provide adequate clearance for fuel line connections, and installation is further simplified with a two-piece filler neck. Each tank features internal baffling required to support high performance engines.
Cooling with Copper & Brass
Cooling your third-gen F-body should come with peace of mind, and Johnson’s Radiator Works has you covered with a new, brass four-core radiator. The dual-crossflow 1982–92 Camaro/Firebird radiator is offered for all popular engine applications; small- and big-blocks as well as later model engine swaps.
Johnson’s builds its radiators in its Alabama facility based on a four-row 2.75-inch-thick copper core sandwiched between .040-inch deep-draw one-piece brass tanks, along with .125x.500-inch brass tubes. Offering 40-percent increased cooling efficiency over aluminum, each radiator is designed as a direct replacement for a simple bolt-in with no modifications required. For boosted applications, they’ll soon have a radiator with an integrated heat exchanger!
Rack & Pinion Steering
It’s hard to believe that the third-gen Camaros and Firebirds were not equipped with rack-and-pinion steering. Flaming River can provide what GM never did with its Power Rack and Pinion Cradle Kit Conversion.
Flaming River’s Rack Kit is a direct bolt-in upgrade that replaces the factory steering box and drag link using the original mounting points for a bolt-in fitment. A travel bar design maintains the original pivot geometry and turning radius, plus the kit works seamlessly with the original power steering pump and stock steering column (Flaming River also offers a new column). The kit includes universal joints, shafts, and hardware for easy installation and the rack has already been pressure tested.
Full Swap Systems
Are you thinking of using late-model power for your third-gen project? Take all the guesswork out of the process with Holley’s LS/LT Swap Essentials Packages. These Swap Packages deliver a complete, verified-fitment solution for LS and LT engines, eliminating guesswork and ensuring every component works together seamlessly.
Designed with five modular levels, these kits scale to your budget and goal, from foundational mounts to full accessory drive systems. Each level adds more capability while increasing overall savings versus buying parts individually. Holley’s Swap Kits are engineered and proven to fit and function together, providing you with a confident path to completing your late-model drivetrain swap.
Complete Interior
Third-gen Camaros and Firebirds certainly have cool styling, but their plastic-based interiors and low-quality seat covers haven’t fared well. TMI Products understands this pain point for owners, so they developed an entire interior system that will get your third-gen looking like new.
Start with a molded fiberglass dash pad to cover that dry-rotted factory original, followed by replacement flat door panels and armrest pads. TMI also offers a new center console armrest along with carpet kits for the passenger and rear hatch areas. The icing on the cake is, of course, TMI’s signature seats, including their Trans-Am series front bucket that are available with mounting brackets that make for an easy, bolt-in installation.
Tuned Port EFI
Third-gen F-body cars were packed with technology, including the Tuned Port Injection system that was introduced in 1985. Compared to today’s EFI systems, these were quite crude and there were limitations on tuning the calibration when engine upgrades were made. To solve that issue, FiTech now offers a Retro-Fit EFI system for the iconic TPI intake and platform.
The kit is based on FiTech’s proven self-learning EFI technology and will help you dial-in the performance of your TPI-equipped small-block. A robust ECU and harness are supplied that are ready to plug-into the TPS, IAC, CTS, WBO2, knock sensors, injectors, and distributor, and the system can easily be calibrated through the a color touchscreen handheld controller.
Big Screens Look Stock
Looking to upgrade to a large screen radio with all the modern bells and whistles but not sure how to make the installation look right? Screaming Chicken has a solution to make your double-DIN head unit fit properly with factory looks with its Double DIN Reverse Mount Kit.
The Screaming Chicken kit moves your HVAC controls down and places the head unit above it. The kit features aluminum brackets to secure the new radio in place, then is finished with a factory-style bezel assembly. Screaming Chicken also has radios available that require no modifications to install in your third-gen F-body and a full line of other car audio products.
Front Brake Upgrade
With today’s horsepower levels, it’s important that your brake system can safely bring your third-gen Camaro or Firebird to a stop. Wilwood Disc Brakes has several options to improve the braking system starting with its Front Big Brake & Aluminum Hub Kits. These kits provide the added advantage of larger-diameter rotors for traditional non-ABS spindles and fit 15-inch or larger wheels on 1982–92 F-cars.
The kits feature Wilwood’s forged billet Dynalite four-piston calipers, 12.19x.81-inch-diameter black e-coat finish rotors, and their BP-10 performance brake pads to generate big brake stopping power. The calipers are available in gloss red or black powder coat with 26 surcharge color options available.
No Sag Door Panels
Third-gen door panels are notorious for fitting poorly and settling down over the years. The crew at Third Gen Ranch developed a useful fix to help save your original panels and keep them mounted properly.
The Inner Door Panel Repair Kit is based on two thin ABS plastic pieces that attach to the back side of the inner door panel using pre-installed double sided tape. The black plastic is only 0.60-inch thick so they won’t affect the mounting and they help strengthen the upper door trim holes. The panels can be used to repair torn holes or simply to strengthen and protect the holes from future damage.
Advancing Instrumentation
The instrument clusters of the third-gen Camaro and Firebird were pretty darn good in terms of layout and ease of viewing, which is why Dakota Digital focused on retaining that stock styling when they developed the RTX series of replacement gauges. In fact, a casual glance may dismiss these as original equipment, but once the LED backlighting turns on, you know these gauges are more than factory!
Dakota packed these gauges with modern technology including Bluetooth programming and high-definition TFT message centers that can be fully configured to display just about any piece of information desired. Setup can be done in the palm of your hand with a smartphone or tablet.
Big Bad Baer
Baer has everything you need to update the braking performance of your third-gen F-body. The company’s Pro+ Front system features its 6P (six-piston) caliper mounted to a 13- or 14-inch two-piece, zinc-plated drilled and slotted rotor. The rotors are pre-assembled with NAS high grade stainless hardware and the billet aluminum hubs are pre-assembled with bearings packed in Redline synthetic grease and pre-assembled on new spindles.
In the rear, Baer offers a complementing Pro+ kit or, for a more budget-friendly option, check out their 13-inch SS4+ system The 13-inch rotors are pre-assembled and a unique backing plate is supplied as a caliper mount that also houses a modern one-piece parking brake shoe assembly.
Sticking with the classic Chevy small-block V8 in your Camaro or Firebird? Summit Racing offers Metallic-Ceramic Coated Headers that fit 305 and 350 engines with a mid-length design for maximum ground clearance. The 1 5/8-inch primary tubes are cyclically welded from 18-gauge steel to reduce distortion, and the polished metallic-ceramic coating helps reduce under-hood temperatures while resisting corrosion.
Summit’s headers deliver trouble-free performance thanks to heavy-duty 5/16-inch thick machined flanges to eliminate leaks, 16-gauge steel collectors with a 3-inch three-bolt collector flange, and there’s an oxygen sensor bung. The headers will fit most angle plug heads including factory Chevrolet Bowtie heads.
Battery to the Back
One of the first upgrades you can get started on with your third-gen project is to relocate the battery to thespare tire area. There are two benefits to this: improving the weight distribution and cleaning up the engine compartment. Thanks to HammerFab’s Third-Gen Relocation Kit, it’s an easy modification with great looks.
HammerFab’s heavy duty bracket assembly is made for a Group 34 series battery and features a laser-cut steel bracket and tray, available in raw steel or satin black powder coat. The bottom-clamp design eliminates bulky top bars for a clean look and secure mount. Check with HammerFab for more new third-gen products coming soon.
Taking Control
Chances are, the ball joint and control arm bushings of your third-gen Camaro or Firebird are overdue to be replaced, but wouldn’t you rather bolt-in a much stronger, lighter, and better engineered tubular control arm? Speedway Motors has you covered with robust tubular control arms that fit the factory mounting points, will accept factory shocks or performance coil-overs, and even the factory sway bar end links.
The control arms are based on strong 1.5-inch diameter tubing with a .120-inch wall thickness. Once welded, the arms are treated to a gloss black powder coating then fitted with greaseable Delrin bushings and OE-spec ball joints. Speedway even includes polyurethane bump stops to complete the package.

K-Member Swap
QA1’s tubular K-member for the 1982-92 GM F-body is a bolt-in front suspension upgrade that delivers more than just handling improvement. The design reinforces the front end unibody structure, saves significant weight (32 pounds), and opens the area around the engine with increased header space, making it an effective upgrade for modern builds.
The K-member gives you modular engine mounts for drivetrain choices and provides the flexibility to use either QA1’s Proma Star Coil-Over Struts or their Spring Sliders, depending on your goals. Speaking of goals, QA1 offers a Tunnel Mounted Torque Arm for the rear suspension, plus subframe connectors, steering upgrades, and a complete Full Vehicle Handling Kit for these cars.
Coil-Over Conversion
Trying to get the rear of your third-gen Camaro to sit a bit lower while improving the ride and handling of the back end? Detroit Speed offers a Rear Coil-Over Conversion Kit to replace the old school shock and springs with modern suspension components featuring their Detroit Tuned valving and specific springs with a rate of 275 lbs-in.
The base coil-over package offers extensive ride height adjustability and is optimized around a 2-inch drop from stock height. Installation requires only minor drilling on the existing axle bracket, and you can choose from standard shocks, single-adjustable or their double-adjustable set to really dial-in your ride with ideal low speed and high speed rebound.
