One Million Porsche Cars and Counting. The 911 Reaches Seven Figure Milestone
The Porsche 911 has enjoyed over five decades on the top shelf of sports cars. What’s most remarkable to us is the bucking of the tri-annual restyle trend which is so common among mainline manufacturers. The 911 has always remained the same. Compact, balanced and stylish – the shape and contour is an image etched in the minds of motor heads the world over. Last week, the one millionth (Dr. Evil voice) Porsche 911 rolled off the assembly line in Zuffenhausen, Germany 54 years after its world debut.
Part of its legend comes from the power-to-weight ratio, the iconic flat six in naturally aspirated and boosted trim, the sloping rear quarters and sometimes bulging fenders and its sound – that unmistakable high-winding and powerful pitch. From LeMans to the Mille Miglia to racetracks and road courses worldwide, the 911 has blown by the competition.
So, needless to say, last week’s coronation was a special occasion.
And by the way, what’s with the Germans and green lately? The new Mercedes AMG GT R came out earlier this year in AMG “Green Hell Mango.” As you can see Porsche selected “Irish Green” for the one millionth (Dr. Evil voice) 911. It works for us. The color of money or something like that.
At the ceremony, Chairman Wolfgang Porsche told the assembled crowd of his fondest memories. “54 years ago, I was able to take my first trips over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with my father. The feeling of being in a 911 is just as enjoyable now as it was then. That’s because the 911 has ensured that the core values of our brand are as visionary today as they were in the first Porsche 356/1 from 1948.”

The particular model chosen as the one millionth (Dr. Evil voice) was a 911 Carrera S. Which leads us to our next question. Just how many 911 versions and models are there anyway?
