Nostalgia Drag Racing Takes Center Stage at 64th Annual March Meet
Drag Racers have been coming to Famoso Dragstrip in Bakersfield, CA, since 1959. The abandoned airstrip has been hallowed ground for more than 60 years. Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, Don Prudhomme, Tom McEwen, Mike Sorokin, James Warren and Tony Nancy have all won here. To win the March Meet at Famoso…in any class…is a dream come true.
The 64th annual Good Vibrations Motorsports March Meet held March 3-6, 2022 had more than 400 race cars competing in 18 different classes. The biggest nostalgia drag race in the world featured nitro-burning nostalgia top fuel dragsters, funny cars and fuel altereds along with a wide variety of rails, gassers and muscle cars.
Throughout the weekend racers not only had to battle each other, but Mother Nature as well. She packed a punch with a winter storm that included rain and bone-chilling conditions (by California standards) that rarely topped 60 degrees, making racing conditions tricky and fast.
It took perseverance, hard work and a little bit of luck for the competitors who reached the final round. In the nitro classes, Bret Williamson defeated Jim Murphy in top fuel, Bobby Cottrell took the win light in funny car when Geoff Monise couldn’t make the call, Dan Hix knocked off Mark Whynaught in the fuel altered class, and Lyle Greenberg took home the trophy in nitro pro comp in his first trip ever to the March Meet. Congratulations to all 18 winners on their hard earned victories.
