Holiday Road – Wheel Hub Live Comes to the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed over Memorial Day Weekend
All roads lead to the Speedway Motors Museum of American Speed. That could very well be the tagline for the Wheel Hub Live event, which in just three years has become a must-attend gathering for many top-tier car builders from around the country, plus hundreds of enthusiasts. The staff of the Wheel Hub family of publications and the team from Speedway Motors and the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska, have joined forces to create a unique car show that combines a road trip excursion, visits to interesting sites and shops, and an opportunity to put select works of automotive art on display where they belong – in a museum!
Held the past three years on the Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, Wheel Hub Live kicked off on May 23 this year with a Friday tour that departed from the Museum of American Speed in Lincoln. The drive traversed two-lane highways and backroads through the Nebraska countryside on its way to its first stop, the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum near Ashland, where some of the featured vehicles got to park inside a massive hangar filled with vintage aircraft.
After a couple hour touring the SAC Museum, the tour wound its way through more backroads on its way to the second stop, the amazing Peter Fink American Muscle Car Museum in Omaha. This private museum showcases more than 120 examples of some of the greatest muscle cars ever to roll off an American assembly line. There are some pretty cool hot rods and street machines in the collection, too.
From there, participants had the option of cruising straight back to Lincoln or stopping at shops like CAL Auto Creations and No Coast Custom and Rod Shop. The fun-filled Friday finished off with a participant dinner at the Museum of American Speed.
The festivities continued on Saturday, when the Speedway Motors parking lot filled up with hundreds of cars and trucks for its first cars and coffee event of the season. This included the Museum being open, with several dozen Wheel Hub featured vehicles mixed in among the many other curated displays. In addition to checking out the Wheel Hub vehicles up close and personal, visitors could also explore the recently opened Unser Collection and Herzog Motorsports Collections showcasing some legendary racing vehicles.
With cars both inside and outside the Museum, plus food trucks, vendors, and many other things to see, the Saturday gathering stretched well into the afternoon as participants and spectators took it all in. Most were reluctant to pack up and leave the Wheel Hub Live event, but they all left with great memories of road miles, incredible vehicles, and the good times that come when you gather with friends and fellow car enthusiasts.
